9 Paul Wesley And Ian Somerhalder’s Directed Episodes Show How Well They Understood The Brothers’ Bond

Both Salvatore brothers, or actually the actors who portrayed them dipped their toes in directorial waters on the show. Ian directed multiple episodes, including “The Downward Spiral.” One of the episodes Paul was in charge of was “Requiem For A Dream,” which has some great brother-bonding moments, including Damon telling Stefan he’d dialed H for ‘hero’ when he called him.

However, the one that most proves the affinity for the Salvatore duo is “Things We Lost In The Fire,” where the Salvatore brothers both suffer from hallucinations and Stefan finally managed to bring Damon back. The script is of course written by the writers, but surely Wesley’s vision completed the episode in an important way. Nobody would understand the bond better than one of the brothers himself.

8 Salvatore Brothers Almost Had A Different Name

Many fans aren’t aware that the beloved Salvatore name almost ended up being something else. Even though the brothers had the last name Salvatore in the books, the writers initially changed it to Whitmore, perhaps to account for all the changes they introduced regarding Salvatore’s backstory.

“The very first script we delivered that made the rounds was Stefan and Damon Whitmore,” Plec recalled in an interview.

The reason for the near change of the name was that they wanted to make the name more appropriate for a small-town American audience, but their decision to keep the original name was ultimately the right one, as the fans can’t imagine using any other name to refer to Damon and Stefan.

Both actors who portrayed the Salvatore brothers thought the best and the most fitting ending for them was for both of them to die. “I just felt that it was more poetic for these two brothers to go away and then to let these humans resettle back into their town,” said Somerhalder in an interview.

While the ending would have been very poetic, this would have enraged many fans, and Somerhalder ended up losing this particular battle.
