Charlie Clements: From Sidcup Roots to EastEnders Legend

Early Life in Sidcup

Not everyone knows that Charlie Clements, who once played one of EastEnders’ most beloved young characters, was born and raised in Sidcup. Born in 1987, Charlie grew up in South East London and balanced school with part-time work. Before fame found him, he was studying for his A-levels and working at a Waitrose in Bromley.

The Start of His Acting Career

Charlie’s first break came in 2005 when he appeared in The Bill. He played Adrian Bickman, a teenager with high-functioning autism. This performance marked his screen debut and opened the door to bigger opportunities.

Becoming Bradley Branning

In January 2006, at just 18, Charlie joined EastEnders as Bradley Branning. The character quickly won fans over with his kind nature and turbulent love life. Bradley’s romance and marriage with Stacey Slater, played by Lacey Turner, became one of the show’s most gripping storylines.

But drama soon followed. Stacey’s shocking affair with Bradley’s father, Max Branning, led to one of EastEnders’ most iconic Christmas episodes. Over 14 million viewers tuned in to watch the fallout, cementing the Branning family as central to the soap’s legacy.

Storylines and Struggles

Bradley wasn’t just a romantic lead. His journey also explored important issues like depression, which he faced after his split from Stacey. Viewers watched him navigate work at the car lot, clash with his father, and rebuild his life. Eventually, Bradley and Stacey planned a fresh start together, but tragedy struck before they could move on.

A Tragic End on the Queen Vic Roof

In February 2010, during the soap’s live 25th anniversary, Bradley’s story came to a heartbreaking conclusion. Wrongly accused of killing Archie Mitchell, Bradley tried to escape police with Stacey by his side. The live rooftop chase ended in disaster as Bradley fell from the Queen Vic roof.

Stacey then confessed to Max that she was the real killer, shocking millions of viewers. The episode drew over 16 million people, making it one of the most unforgettable moments in EastEnders history.

Charlie’s performance earned him multiple awards, including Best Newcomer and Best Soap Actor. Even years later, Bradley Branning’s death is remembered as one of the soap’s most emotional exits.

Life After EastEnders

After leaving the Square, Charlie turned to stage and screen work. He appeared in productions like The Haunting and Faith, as well as TV roles in Casualty and Elizabeth and Her Enemies. Away from acting, he pursued his passion for music, playing guitar in his band, Brooks Lives.

Family Life and a Career Break

In 2018, Charlie married Rebecca Clatworthy, and the couple now share three children. Like many, Charlie’s life shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic. He temporarily stepped away from acting and worked as a chef and at a garden centre before returning to the craft he loves.

From Sidcup to Soap History

Charlie Clements’ journey shows the resilience of a local Sidcup boy who became part of EastEnders history. From his early days in Bromley to live television in front of millions, he remains a fan favourite. Today, with his family by his side and a career back on track, Charlie’s story continues — proof that sometimes soap legends are born in the most unexpected places.
