Walford has welcomed back a familiar face after more than two decades, as Karen Henthorn reprises her role as Julie Bates in EastEnders. The actress first appeared on the BBC soap in 1997, but her return in 2025 marks an emotional reunion for fans — and for Julie herself, who comes back to support Nigel Bates in the wake of his dementia diagnosis.
But what has Karen been up to during her 27 years away from Albert Square? From high-profile TV roles to a career in education, here’s a look at her journey.
Who is Karen Henthorn?
Karen Henthorn, 61, hails from Oldham, Lancashire. A familiar face on British television, she built a steady career across dramas, comedies, and soaps before returning to Walford this year.
Her early appearances included roles in The Booze Cruise, Doctors, Heartbeat, and Shameless, where she played Marissa Platting. She also featured in cult favourites such as Young Dracula (CBBC), Trollied (Sky One), and In the Flesh (BBC Three).
More recently, Karen has appeared in Vera (ITV), The Teacher (Channel 5), and BBC dramas Time and The Listeners. Beyond the screen, she also starred in the stage production of War Horse, touring with the National Theatre in 2013.
Karen’s Return to EastEnders
Karen originally joined EastEnders in 1997, playing Julie Haye, later Bates, in a short-lived but memorable storyline. Her character quickly became romantically involved with Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), before the couple left Walford together the following year.
Her 2025 return is tinged with bittersweet emotion. Julie reconnects with Nigel only to discover he is battling dementia. Speaking about reprising the role, Karen admitted:
“It’s very surreal to be back in Albert Square after 27 years and working with the delightful Paul Bradley again – it’s scary how fast the time has gone! Julie has got some awful surprises ahead of her after the initial relief she feels to discover Nigel is still alive.”
She also revealed her delight at working alongside soap icons such as Paul Bradley and Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell), who remain central to the show.
A Familiar Face in Coronation Street
While Karen is making waves again on EastEnders, many viewers will also recognise her from ITV’s rival soap Coronation Street.
She joined the cast in 2007 as Teresa Bryant, the ex-wife of Jerry Morton (Michael Starke) and mother to Kayleigh (Jessica Barden) and Finlay (Ramone Quinn). Teresa’s brash personality and complicated relationships brought plenty of drama to Weatherfield.
Karen became a regular on Corrie in 2008 but departed in 2010, following Teresa’s ill-fated romance with Lloyd Mullaney (Craig Charles).
Life Beyond the Soaps
Acting isn’t Karen’s only passion. Alongside her screen and stage work, she has built a career in teaching and mentoring aspiring actors.
She currently teaches screen acting on the BA (Hons) Acting programme at the Italia Conti Academy in Clapham and the Manchester School of Theatre. Her guidance has helped shape the next generation of performers.
In addition, she works as a professional voiceover artist, bringing her skills to a variety of projects beyond television.
What’s Next for Julie Bates in Walford?
Julie’s reappearance in EastEnders promises plenty of emotional storylines ahead. Reuniting with Nigel during his dementia battle ensures heartfelt drama, while her reintroduction after such a long absence opens the door for fresh connections in Albert Square.
Fans are already eager to see whether Julie’s return is temporary or if Karen Henthorn will remain on the cobbles of Walford for the foreseeable future.
