A Young Life Cut Short

Fans of Emmerdale were recently reminded of the soap’s tragic history when Angelica King, now played by Rebecca Bakes, returned to screens after her dramatic storyline. But many don’t realize that the role of Angelica was first played by Sophie Firth, a toddler whose life ended in devastating circumstances back in 2012.

Sophie joined the ITV soap in 2009, appearing as Jimmy and Nicola King’s daughter. Off screen, she was a bright, playful little girl preparing for her nursery nativity. But just days before the performance, she suffered a horrifying accident that claimed her life.

The Day of the Accident

In December 2012, Sophie was visiting her grandmother’s home in South Yorkshire. Excited about her role as an angel in the Christmas play, she tried on her costume dress to proudly show her family.

Tragically, as she leaned near a gas fire, the fabric of her dress touched the flames. In an instant, it ignited, engulfing the three-year-old in fire.

Her mother, Amy, desperately tried to smother the flames with a blanket. Despite her efforts, 70 percent of Sophie’s body was covered in severe burns.

A Nine-Day Fight for Life

Sophie was rushed to Sheffield Children’s Hospital where she fought for her life for nine agonizing days. Doctors worked tirelessly, but complications from a blood infection proved too much for her tiny body.

Her devastated parents, Neil and Amy, later released a statement describing Sophie as their “bright and beautiful little girl” and promised to “carry their little princess in their arms forever.”

The Outpouring of Support

The tragedy shocked both the soap world and the public. A spokesperson for Emmerdale said:

“We are devastated to hear of Sophie’s tragic death. Our sincere condolences go out to her family. Everyone at Emmerdale is thinking of them at this sad time.”

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue also issued a warning following the accident, urging families to be extra cautious around open flames, particularly during the cold winter months.

Keeping Sophie’s Memory Alive

Since her passing, Sophie’s parents have worked to honor her memory. They launched a fundraising campaign for The Children’s Hospital Charity, raising almost £23,000.

On their JustGiving page, they wrote:

“Anyone who ever met Sophie knows not only was she beautiful but she was exceptionally bright, loving, and funny. Her family and friends miss her more than words can say. Sophie was three and a half (and the half mattered), and she brought joy to every moment of our lives. She was the heart of our family.”

A Legacy of Love

Though her time on Earth was heartbreakingly short, Sophie left an unforgettable mark on those who knew her — and on Emmerdale history. Her story stands as both a tender memory of a beloved little girl and a reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike.

Even more than a decade later, Sophie’s light continues to shine through the love of her family and the lives touched by their charity work in her name.
